The Link Between VOCs and Ozone Pollution

Everybody has heard of the ozone layer, the shield of ozone gas that surrounds the Earth and blocks much of the ultraviolet light emitted by the sun. When it appears closer to the Earth, however, ozone gas isn’t so beneficial—it can cause throat irritation, sinus congestion, coughing, and eventually lung damage. Ozone at ground level doesn’t occur naturally; it’s formed when certain chemicals are exposed to sunlight. These chemicals are known as volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, and we encounter them most frequently in the form of motor vehicle emissions. While vehicle emissions standards have helped to curb the number of pollutants that get into the air as a result of our driving, VOCs still have the potential to make us sick.
