Exploring the Essentials of Car Maintenance
If you want your vehicle to stand you in good stead for many years, it’s essential to take proper care of it. No matter what kind of car you own, understanding its basic maintenance requirements is a must. You should begin by finding an auto shop in your area that you can trust, and then scheduling routine service appointments there. Vehicles have a number of maintenance needs, but these are among the most important tasks:
Tire checks. The safety of your vehicle depends on a lot of factors, but tires are among the most important. You should check the air pressure in your tires regularly, and you should also be sure to inspect the tread to make sure it isn’t getting too worn. It’s also important to have your tires rotated on your manufacturer-recommended schedule.
Oil changes. Your engine can’t function properly without oil—but oil, like many things, has an expiration date. You need to replace your engine’s oil from time to time in order to keep your vehicle running smoothly—either every 3,000 miles or as recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. If you’re in doubt about the best schedule for oil changes for your car, ask your service technician.
Brake pad checks. No driver needs to be told that it’s important to have working brakes, but the effectiveness of your brakes depends on the pads. It can be difficult to tell when your brake pads are wearing down, so it’s essential to have professional brake inspections on a routine basis, preferably at least twice a year.
Air filter changes. Having a clean air filter in your engine will help you drive more efficiently, will help to reduce the number of emissions your vehicle puts into the atmosphere, and will help extend the life of your engine. That’s why it’s important to change the air filter in your vehicle whenever necessary—usually every 10,000 miles or so.
