When you get into an accident on the road, having your vehicle looked at by a professional is essential to ensure that all of the damage is identified and repaired. Ideally, of course, you’d avoid the accident altogether. In fact, many auto accidents are entirely avoidable. Here are some tips that will help you steer clear of collisions:
Avoid distractions. When you’re driving, don’t do anything that will take your mind off the road. Don’t apply makeup, eat, or take your eyes off the road to adjust the radio. You should also never text or talk on the phone while you’re behind the wheel. If you get an important call while you’re driving, pull over to the side of the road as soon as it is safe to do so and call the person back.
Don’t drive while fatigued. You probably already know that you should never drive while under the influence of alcohol, but driving while you’re extremely tired can be just as dangerous. If you’re on a long trip, stop to stretch your legs and rest at least once every couple of hours. Make sure that you’ve gotten an adequate amount of rest before a long drive.
Drive defensively. It’s important to stay alert to everything that is happening around you while you’re driving—and to be ready to react at a second’s notice. Keep a safe distance from other cars, and signal well before you switch lanes. If you are driving in low-visibility conditions such as fog or heavy rain, slow down and be even more attentive to the road than usual.
