When you’re new to driving, safety should always be your top priority. New drivers are more vulnerable than anybody else on the road to car accidents, which means that they need to be especially cautious. Fortunately, there are some simple tips you can adopt to make driving as safe as possible. Here are some points you should keep in mind:
Stick to daytime driving. You should try to ease into nighttime driving, particularly in the hours after midnight. You are much more likely to be involved in an accident when driving at night than you are in the daytime, both because it’s harder for you to see and because it’s harder for other drivers to see you. Always use your headlights when driving at night.
Avoid driving in bad weather. It’s a good idea to minimize driving in extreme weather—such as snow or heavy rain—as much as possible, especially if you’re new to driving. If you can’t avoid driving in bad weather, exercise precautions such as driving more slowly than usual, using your high-beam headlights, and pulling off the road if necessary.
Practice driving as much as you can. The more frequently you drive, the better a driver you will be. Try to get behind the wheel for at least a short time every day, and work your way up from driving around side streets to driving on busy roadways. It can be helpful for new drivers to drive with somebody else in the passenger’s seat, preferably an experienced driver.
