It’s becoming increasingly clear that the future of the planet depends on how well we are able to rein in our energy usage, and vehicle manufacturers have a critical role to play in that effort. Since its founding in 2003, Tesla Motors has taken the initiative in pushing smart energy and energy-efficient vehicles. These are some of the company’s most notable sustainable energy projects.
Electric cars. In the United States, the name Tesla is all but synonymous with the electric car. Tesla produced the first electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster, from 2008 to 2012; an updated car is expected by 2019. In 2012, Tesla introduced the Model S, which went on to become the world’s most popular plug-in electric car. The company’s long-term goal is to make electric cars as accessible and affordable for most people as gasoline-powered cars.
Battery technology. One of Tesla’s major breakthroughs has come in the field of battery production. Tesla uses battery packs in its electric cars that rely on lithium-ion cells to provide an impressive amount of energy, allowing the cars to drive further without needing to recharge. These batteries are also perhaps the most cost-effective batteries available for electric cars.
Solar roofs. Tesla’s latest project promises to be one of its most revolutionary yet: Solar roof panels that cost less than ordinary roof shingles. According to Tesla founder Elon Musk, the roof panels will be both cheaper to make and cheaper to transport than traditional tiles. This could be a critical step toward making solar power a universally accessible alternative energy source.
