Collision Repair Terms to Know

If you’ve been in an accident, your vehicle will almost certainly need professional collision repair. When you visit your auto body shop and speak with an estimator about your vehicle, it can be helpful for you to be familiar with some of the most commonly used terminology. Here are some terms that you may want to know:

Aftermarket parts. Also known as non-OEM parts or alternative parts, aftermarket parts are new copycat parts used in repairing your vehicle that were not made by the original manufacturer and do not meet OEM standards. They are distinguished from OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts, which do come from the vehicle’s manufacturer.

LKQ. LKQ stands for “Like Kind and Quality.” These are used parts off of junk cars. It is used to describe replacement parts that are taken from other vehicles and used in vehicle repair. The acronym means that the part has been found to be close enough in design, function, and quality to the original part to be used safely in your vehicle.

R&I/R&R. These acronyms stand, respectively, for “Remove and Install” and “Remove and Replace.” If a part that has been taken from your vehicle can be re-used, it is classed as a R&I part. If the part has been too damaged to reuse, it is classed as R&R.

VIN. Your VIN (vehicle identification number) is a unique number that only your vehicle has. It is used to identify your vehicle and also to tell anyone who is performing repairs on your vehicle what kind of parts should be used.

Detailing. Detailing refers to a comprehensive cleaning of the exterior and interior of your vehicle, ensuring that no signs of the repair process are visible. Detailing is generally done after repair is completed and before your vehicle is returned to you.
