Types of Damage to Look for After an Auto Collision

When a vehicle is involved in any sort of collision on the road, it can be difficult to determine the scope of the damage. While some types of damage are clearly visible and conspicuous, other types are much more challenging to identify. Here are some types of damage that you should be sure to check your vehicle for in the aftermath of an accident.

Minor vehicle damage. This is often the most difficult type of damage for vehicle owners to find, because it may be all but invisible—at least at first. Weeks after the accident, you may stumble on a tiny scratch on your car door or a ding in your frame. It’s important to thoroughly and carefully examine your vehicle after any accident to ensure that these small problems aren’t overlooked.

Moderate vehicle damage. Any type of damage that impairs the functionality of your vehicle in any way is at least moderate damage. If your car door has been damaged to the point where you can’t open or shut it completely, your fender has been significantly dented, or your airbags deployed during the collision, you are dealing with a moderate level of damage to your vehicle.

Severe vehicle damage. If your vehicle has suffered major structural damage—such as a bent frame—that makes it unsafe or impossible to drive, it is defined as severe. In many cases, you might assume that a vehicle that has suffered severe damage is totaled and beyond repair. Before making this assumption, however, you should have your vehicle checked out by an experienced auto repair professional.
