A Look at Common Suspension Problems

Every time you drive over a bump or hit a pothole, you are putting your vehicle’s suspension to the test. Your suspension is designed to take a beating and keep you comfortable as you’re driving, however, the different parts of it can wear out and require you to seek mechanical repair. Here are just a few of the suspension problems that will call for you to visit a body shop.

Poor Alignment

In order for your car to turn the way you want it to when you use your steering wheel, your tires need to be aligned properly. Your vehicle’s alignment can be affected negatively when you accidentally hit a curb or get into a fender-bender. Poor alignment can cause your tires to wear more quickly than usual, so it’s important to have your alignment checked routinely.

Worn Out Shock Absorbers

Your shock absorbers are responsible for reducing the bouncing and shaking that you feel when you drive over bumps. They contain fluid and when that fluid begins to leak, your shock absorbers will not be as efficient as they should be. You will feel it when you hit bumps, and you will know that it’s time to take your vehicle to an auto body shop.

Broken Springs

Does one side of your vehicle look like it’s sagging? If so, you probably have a spring that has broken. Your suspension’s springs are designed to hold up the weight of your car. When one breaks, you will often notice that one side of your vehicle appears to be higher than the other side. A broken spring will make it more difficult for you to maneuver your vehicle when you are driving.

Squeaky Ball Joints

Your ball joints connect your vehicle’s suspension to the wheels. They also absorb a portion of the shock that takes place when you are steering your car. You will likely hear them squeaking when it’s time to replace them.
